Medication Administration at School Information

JLCD Policy Medicines / Administering Medicines to Students

Dear Parent or Guardian,
It is the belief of the Board of Education medication should be administered at home. However, under certain conditions, it is best for the student’s health and learning for the student to take prescribed medications and or over the counter medication during the school day.
All 3 schools have a full time Registered Nurse however there are times when the RN is not on school campus and the principal designee (non-licensed staff) will administer the prescribed medication according to written guidelines.

Prescription Medication and administration by school personnel
1. The medication must be prescribed by a physician.
2. The parent or guardian must provide written permission to administer the medicine to the student. School forms are available on this website or in the school’s health office.
3. The medication must come to the school office in the prescription container as put up by the pharmacist. Written directions from the physician or pharmacist must state the name of the patient, the name of the medicine, the dosage, and the time it is to be given.
4. A school administer may designate a school employee to administer the medications.
5. Student self-administration of prescription medication: When the physician feels it is necessary for the student to carry and self-administer the medication, the physician shall provide written recommendations, to be attached to the signed parent permission form except in the case of medication for diagnosed anaphylaxis and breathing disorders requiring handheld inhaler devices. In these cases the student’s name on the prescription label is sufficient for the physician’s recommendation. The parent or guardian must provide written permission for the student to self-administer and carry the medication. Appropriate forms are available on this website and the school health office.

Over-the Counter Medication (OTC) Medicine that does not require a prescription order but is sold, offered, promoted, and advertised to the general public. The following procedure has been established to ensure the protection of the school and the student:

1. Written permission must be provided by the parent or guardian for the administration of specific over-the-counter drugs. Appropriate forms are available on this website and the school health office.
2. Any over the counter drug or medicine sent by the parent to be administered to a student must come to the school office in the original manufacturer’s packaging with all directions, dosages, compound contents, and proportions clearly marked.
3. The school Administrator may designate a school employee to administer a specific over-the-counter drug.
4. Over the counter drugs must be kept in their original containers in a locked medicine cabinet.
5. Student self-administering OTC medication must have written permission by the parent or guardian and student’s physician for the administration of specific over-the counter drugs. Appropriate forms are available from the website or school health office.
6. Necessity for self-administration of an over-the-counter drug or medicine shall be determined by the student’s physician and must be verified by a signed physician’s statement attached to the parent or guardian permission form indicating the specific drug or medicine.
7. Over-the-counter drugs or medicine sent by the parent to be administered by the student must be kept by the student in the original manufacturer’s packaging, with all directions, dosages, compound contents, and proportions clearly marked. Medications must be kept secure and under no circumstances shall the student make available, provide, or give the item to another person. The student shall immediately report the loss or theft of any medication brought onto school campus.

Protection of Students:
1. Use or administration of medication on school premises may be disallowed or strictly limited if it is determined by the Superintendent, in consultation with medical personnel, that a threat of abuse or misuse of the medicine may pose a risk of harm to a member of the student population.
2. In order to assist student’s to be able to stay in class and benefit from provided education, FHASD sponsoring physician and FHASD Superintendent has approved the use of specific over-the-counter medication only with parent permission and according to established standards.
3. Violation of this policy and regulation may subject the student to disciplinary action.
FHASD has a sponsoring physician providing written orders for school nurses to administer specific OTC medication under specific conditions. Parents must provide permission on appropriate school forms during the school registration process. Parents may make changes to their permissions at any time during the course of the school. A new parent permission form is required for each school year.
