Tell the Nurse About Your Child's Health

Please let the school nurse know if your child has:

• Allergies
• A medical condition
• A long-term health problem
• Medication that needs to be taken at school

The Health Office will give you the forms needed so we can safely care for your child at school.

All medication requires paperwork. This includes both prescription medicine and over-the-counter medicine. Students who need to carry their own medication must also have the required forms on file.

Tylenol or Motrin at School

If your child asks for Tylenol or Motrin during the school day, I will call you before giving it, even if you have already signed the permission form. This helps make sure your child has not already taken the same medicine before coming to school.

When Should My Child Stay Home?

Please keep your child home if they have a fever of 100°F or higher or have signs of illness, such as:

• Fever
• Trouble breathing or shortness of breath
• Chills or body aches
• Sore throat
• Headache
• Feeling very tired
• Runny or stuffy nose
• Cough
• Vomiting
• Diarrhea

Returning to School

Fever:
Your child may return after they have been fever-free for at least 24 hours without fever-reducing medicine such as Tylenol, Motrin, DayQuil, or other medicines that lower fever.

Antibiotics:
If your child is taking antibiotics for a bacterial infection, they must take the medicine for 24 hours before returning to school.

Flu or COVID-19:
Your child may return after they have been fever-free for 24 hours without fever medicine and feel well enough to participate in class. Medicines like Tamiflu may help symptoms but do not stop the illness from spreading.

Strep Throat or Tonsillitis:
Your child may return after they have taken antibiotics for 24 hours and are feeling better.

Rash:
Children with a rash should stay home until a healthcare provider says it is safe to return to school.

Vomiting or Diarrhea:
Your child must be free from vomiting and diarrhea for 24 hours before returning to school.
