May 2018 Principal's Corner
Greetings CSMS Panther Family,
It is hard to believe that I am writing the May newsletter and that summer is in sight! It feels like I was just trying to figure out what to say for the August newsletter. During our last month of school, students and staff will be busy with many exciting activities and learning opportunities. Please refer to the “Dates to Remember” section of the May Newsletter (The Newsletter can be found under the Newsletter tab under Our School tab).
As the year winds down on my first year as Principal of CSMS I would like to thank all students, parents, and staff for making this year successful. I have really enjoyed myself and learned so much about Colonel Smith Middle School and Fort Huachuca this year. It has been my privilege to serve this school. I am already starting to think about year two and what excitement the future holds.
Each year brings forth many changes. Unfortunately, we will be saying farewell to several of our staff members at the end of the school year, who will be moving on to new experiences and challenges. We would like to thank them all for their dedication and commitment to our students during their time at Colonel Smith Middle School. Mrs. Weigle, Mrs. Gee, Mrs. Hardgrave, Mr. Borquez and Mr. Nieto will be moving on to new adventures next year. We wish them all the best in their future endeavors.
I am very proud of our students and their accomplishments throughout the year in sports, clubs, and academics. I have enjoyed learning with them throughout the year. I would like to wish the eighth grade students the very best of luck in their high school years and beyond. I wish all students leaving over the summer the best as they embark on new adventures. I look forward to meeting our new group of 6th grade students and all those who will be arriving for the next year. Finally, to all I wish you a safe and relaxing, fun-filled summer vacation!
Thank you for making 2018 – 2019 a fantastic year!
Joseph A. Gargiul
Greetings Panther Families:
It has been a fantastic start to the 2019 – 2020 school year at Colonel Smith Middle School! The school looks great with a new coat of paint and a summer deep clean. Students returned on July 31st and have been doing a super job, clubs have started while Girls Volleyball and Boys and Girls Cross Country are in full swing.
At Colonel Smith Middle School, we consider ourselves a community of learners made up of students, parents and staff. By working together, the sky is the limit for our students. I aim to provide supportive leadership that facilitates differentiated instruction that meets the needs of all students. The educational programs will be challenging, with attainable goals, and will link the curriculum to previous knowledge and experiences while promoting further exploration.
There are a few things to remember as the year progresses. Attendance is crucial to academic success. Students need to be in attendance daily to take full advantage of the lessons, technology and the hands-on learning projects. Please review our attendance policy with your student, this is located in their daily planner. Students will be expected to wear the uniform everyday with the exception of the special uniform free days each month. Finally, when you are dropping off or picking up your student please pull as far forward as possible in the designated lane. This way we can keep standing cars off of Smith Ave. Please do not cut through the parking lot to drop your student off or drop them off on Smith Avenue. With these few reminders we can keep it safe for all students. Thank you for your help to get our students here daily and making sure they are in the proper uniform.
Please note the “Dates to Remember” section in the monthly newsletter for Holiday, Testing, Events and general information, etc. We will try to keep you informed of all the happenings at CSMS through our website ( https://smith.fhasd.org/), Facebook Page or Twitter account (search for - Colonel Smith Middle School PTO) and Newsletter, as we have many things planned this year for our students to experience.
Finally, please feel free to call me or stop by at any time if you have a question or concern. Communication is so important between home and school, so I welcome you to stop by at any time with a question or just to have a cup of coffee and chat.
Thanks for your support of Colonel Smith Middle School and here’s to a great 2019 - 2020 school year!
Mr. Joseph A. Gargiul
